The disaster in Haiti touched the hearts of Westminster residents and staff in a personal way - some staff members are Haitian and have family there. Many people had donated through their church or favorite charities, but welcomed these opportunities to help too.
Resident Aid.
People at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek are good examples of residents' compassion. Ann Beardslee, resident and a former director of Church World Service (CWS), learned that people wanted an opportunity to donate within the community. So she established Minute for Mission for the community's Vespers services, telling about the international work of CWS, and she set out a basket for donations. People gladly contributed to CWS and its partner Presbyterian Disaster Program.
Staff Aid. Westminster provided a special opportunity for staff members to convert "paid time off" hours into relief contributions. People chose whether it would go to one of several charities or to help finance staff who needed to go to Haiti to help. Click here for the selected charities. As a result, generous donations came from staff at our 17 active living and rental communities, pharmacy and administrative offices.
Whatever way residents and staff chose to help, their personal relief efforts expressed compassion for those in their community who are worried about their families in Haiti - and hope to a nation in need.
